One of our most glamorous mezzo sopranos, Suzanna Guzmán’s recent engagements include the world premiere of Nicholas and Alexandra, Romeo et Juliette and The Grande Duchess of Gerolstein in Los Angeles, Cosi fan tutte in Hawaii, Barber and Figaro in Pittsburgh, Luisa Fernando in Washington and El amor Brujo with the Baltimore Symphony. Upcoming engagements include Giulio Cesare in San Diego, La Traviata in Los Angeles followed by Luisa Fernando in LA and Beijing.  Most recent engagements include The Magic Flute, La Traviata, Peter Grimes and Gianni Schicchi, La Fanciulla del West, Barbieri and Fliegende Hollander in Los Angeles, her first Rosina in The Barber of Seville for Hawaii Opera, Barber and Die Fledermaus in Dallas, A Streetcar Named Desire and The Magic Flute in San Diego, l’incoronazione di Poppea in Columbus and Carmen with Houston, Opera Festival of New Jersey, Fresno, Madison Opera. She has sung the title role in La Favorite with Opera de Montpellier, Carmen with Opera de Nice, Washington and Opera Columbus, Four Saints in Three Acts in Houston, New York and Edinburgh, the world premiere of Florencia en el Amazonas by Daniel Catan in Houston, Los Angeles and Seattle and Paisiello's Il Re Teodoro in Venzia with the companies of Dresden, Berlin, and Montpellier. The 1991 Spoleto Festival brought Suzanna Guzmán to international attention for her critically acclaimed portrayal of the Duchess of Alba in the European premiere of Menotti's Goya.

Since her operatic debut in San Diego's Otello, Miss Guzmán has returned to San Diego for Rosenkavalier, Rigoletto and Fledermaus. She has sung regularly with the Los Angeles Opera in such operas as Cosi fan tutte, Faust, Madama Butterfly, Orpheus, Zauberflote, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, El Gato Montes (nationally televised on PBS) and Tancredi, which she repeated in 1990 for her European debut in Geneva. Ms. Guzmán debuted with the Metropolitan Opera with performances of La Traviata and Rigoletto. A favorite with the Washington Opera, the mezzo has sung in The Tsar's Bride, Carmen, Anna Bolena,  Der Rosenkavalier, Goya, Rigoletto, Madama Butterfly, Amahl and La Traviata and triumphed in the Dallas Opera's production of La Vida Breve and El Amor Brujo.

A  recipient of awards and honors, Ms. Guzmán was a Metropolitan Opera Finalist and won the San Francisco Opera and the Center for Contemporary Opera Competitions. In 1995 she was honored by NBC for her contributions as a role model to the Latino community in a profile, entitled ‘Suzanna Guzmán, Outstanding Latina’, won the Los Angeles Music Center’s Viva Award for outstanding classical musician and the first Placido Domingo Award from the Los Angeles Music Center. Equally adept in Musical Theatre, she has performed nationally in productions of The King and I opposite Yul Brenner, as well as Showboat, Carousel and West Side Story, most recently appearing in the critically acclaimed film Twilight of the Golds.  She can also be heard on the premiere recordings of Menotti’s Goya, Catan’s Florencia en al Amazones and the 2006 Grammy-nominated Chavez Chamber Music with the Southwest Chamber Music/Tambuco.
